Cyclone devastates northern Mozambique

Cyclone Chido (December 2024) left a trail of destruction. More than 100,000 buildings were partially or completely destroyed, including 250 schools and 52 healthcare facilities. Nearly half a million people were directly affected. Some members of the SolidarMed team lost their homes, and others were injured during the storm.

In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, the focus was on urgent medical support. SolidarMed provided fuel for healthcare facilities, ensuring that patients could be transported and treated. Emergency blood donation campaigns were also swiftly organized to prevent shortages in hospitals.

Rebuilding Takes Time

Initial repairs to damaged roofs and electrical installations are underway to restore safe treatment conditions for patients. The SolidarMed office was also severely affected – its roof and solar panels need to be replaced. The first steps have already been taken.
Our colleagues on the ground have secured building materials and reinforced their damaged homes to prevent further deterioration. However, the actual rebuilding process will only begin after the rainy season ends in late April.

As if the devastation caused by Chido wasn’t enough, Cyclone Jude swept across the country on March 10, bringing winds of up to 140 km/h and heavy rainfall. Fortunately, it was less destructive than Chido. SolidarMed remains committed to supporting those affected – providing immediate aid and long-term reconstruction efforts.

Tropical cyclone Chido hit Mozambique with full force on 15 December. The area covers over two million people and entire families have lost everything. Houses were destroyed, roads blocked, electricity and communications were cut off. The number of confirmed dead and injured people is still very unclear and is increasing daily.

In Cabo Delgado, where SolidarMed has been strengthening health care for years, the situation is dramatic. The project area has been badly hit - even the SolidarMed offices in Pemba and Chiúre have been damaged, and a SolidarMed employee is injured in hospital. With the rainy season just beginning, cholera outbreaks are now threatening and the malaria season is upcoming.

The north of Mozambique cannot rest

Severe poverty and a conflict that has been ongoing since 2017, forcing many people to flee their homes, are putting a strain on the healthcare system. Now the storm is causing new suffering - especially for refugee children and families who were defencelessly at its mercy in the makeshift facilities.
